A character gains training in certain skills at 1st level: typically two skills from their background, a small number of predetermined skills from their class, and several skills of your choice granted by your class. You only get four skills to be trained in, so you need to increase the mileage, which makes any feat that makes one skill do another skill's job fantastic. However, they can also be useful for other tasks related to practicing those skills. As I plug in the skill ranks, the program is simply making default assumptions on which are Background and which are not and it is messing up the math. For example, a character with the soldier The character gains that number of regular skill ranks to spend on any skills—essentially refunding the regular skill ranks spent on background skills. New skill descriptions can be found on the following pages. This section provides a step-by-step guide for creating a character using the Pathfinder rules, preceded by a guide to help you understand attribute modifiers. For example, a wizard has Appraise on his Profession Skill The Profession skill represents a background trade your character has and what this character might be doing between adventures. The profession skill can not improve other stats or skills but may substitute certain skill checks or knowledge tasks if the DM deems it appropriate. So if you are a wizard with 18 intelligence at level 1 you have 6 trained skills of your choice (there are no more "class skills," anyone can train anything at full level) plus automatic training in arcana and 1-2 skills from your background, for 8 (usually) total trained skills plus one trained lore skill.
